Tankless Water Heaters: Indoor vs. Outdoor
There are many advantages to having a tankless hot water heater. The benefits of owning this type of unit range from being compact in size to energy efficient. When purchasing a tankless water heater, there is always the question of which unit will best fit your needs - indoor or outdoor? To help determine which would be the best choice for you, let's take a look at some key points to take in to consideration.
An indoor tankless water heater is installed inside your home. An outdoor unit is installed outside the home and is designed to withstand the elements. If you live in a climate where temperatures drop below freezing, you must always be sure to take precautions to avoid freeze damage, such as draining the unit. Eccotemp's whole home outdoor models come in both Liquid Propane and Natural Gas models.
If mounted outside, the unit vents from free air flow. With mounting inside of the home, you must use some type of ventilation piping, whether it is vertical or horizontal venting. Tankless water heaters require specialized venting. Indoor tankless water heaters must be installed so water created by condensation can be drained away from the heater. This requires the venting to be attached to a drain. Eccotemp's mid-size and whole home indoor modelsare sleek with a modern design to compliment any home décor.
Whether you should use an indoor or outdoor tankless will also depend on the the home itself. Existing houses may benefit from an outdoor model, as there are not as many adjustments needed for the plumbing, and you likely will not need to make changes to your house for venting. Tankless water heaters do require a great amount of oxygen...which in turn, requires additional venting to install an indoor unit.
Installation of indoor units may be a better option for a newly constructed home, as they will be an integral part of the new home, instead of adding to the home at a later time. One key advantage to having a tankless water heater installed indoors is that it will not be exposed to severe weather, including freezing temperatures-which can cause significant damage to the unit.
